In 2014, Shirasu Kinjou attends Kyoto University as a graduate student studying Education. He lives in an apartment with his twin brother, who attends classes remotely due to his self-consciousness over being disfigured. When the twins were children, their family was in a traffic accident which killed their parents and left Kotarou with severe burns on his face, right arm and torso. Shirasu suffered injuries, but none as severe as his twin's. The boys lived in an orphanage, but no permanent placement could be found due to Kotarou's deformity and Shirasu's refusal to be separated from him.
Shirasu was sent to school with the "normal" children, while Kotarou was given lessons at the orphanage. His education wasn't nearly as formal or thorough as Shirasu's. While in high school, the boys started dealing drugs in an attempt to quickly save up enough money to support themselves when they left the system. Shirasu did well at school and was admitted to university, and the twins moved to Kyoto. Shirasu studies and tutors undergraduates part-time, while still maintaining a small drug business. Kotarou assists and they manage three junior dealers, and everyone makes some money.
At school, Shirasu has a friend who's 100% straight-edge, Tenka Kumou, who (like him) has been taking care of siblings for a long time. Shirasu is fond of him and his two brothers, but Kotarou doesn't want to meet them. Tenka's starting to suspect Shirasu isn't as clean and respectable as he pretends to be, and Shirasu is getting to the point where something needs to be done about that, but he isn't sure what. Tenka also encourages him to be more social, which he's not really used to but is starting to practice more. Kotarou doesn't really like that, either, as it keeps Shirasu away from home.
Shirasu is duty-driven and very concerned with doing what's best for his family. He has been relying on himself for most of his life, and he's extremely distrustful of everyone besides Kotarou. (Part of this is also because he is engaged in illegal activity where he'll be in serious trouble if anything goes wrong.)
